The Kindness Porch

There are so many lovely signs and sights that signal spring is in the air. The robins, hunting for twigs to add to their nests, the buds, just beginning to show on so many trees, and perhaps our favorite: the porch people, busily preparing for the rebirth yet to come. There are floors to sweep, furniture to position, and neighbors to invite for a morning coffee or late afternoon gathering.

The porch is back in business.

MelroseKind is eager to announce a new initiative that uniquely ties the hopefulness of a porch in springtime with the generosity that our community has come to embrace. Please join us by stopping by our Kindness Porch (hosted by Stephanie at 249 Grove Street in Melrose), where each month, we’ll sponsor a different charitable contribution for a local organization.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the donations we received in March in support of the Bread of Life Backpack Program. Because of the many snacks and drinks and fruit cups you dropped by the porch, Bread of Life is able to continue in their mission to fill bellies and widen smiles.

For the month of April, we will collect NEW SOCKS for donation to vulnerable communities in the Boston area. Socks are the number one clothing item requested by those experiencing homelessness. Having a fresh pair of socks to put on your newly washed feet is a comfort that we believe everyone should be able to have.  By providing socks, we’re not just helping with a genuine need, we’re creating a nonverbal connection that says we care. This is what the MelroseKind movement is all about.

Please stop by our kindness porch — it’s always open! — and drop a new pair of socks (or perhaps a few) in our MelroseKind Collection box. And please reach out if you’ve got an idea for our May collection. We look forward to hearing from you.
