Jenny

Jenny is a dog whisperer. When I mention this to her, she gives me a small smile in return, but we both know it is true.

If you are an animal lover, and even if you’re not, you’ve probably noticed the posts and comments about pooches gone missing. Jenny is tagged in nearly every one.

As a volunteer at Missing Dogs Massachusetts , Jenny takes her role of reuniting family members seriously. Recently, Jenny helped rescue Ginger, who, when visiting Melrose, ran away frightened in unfamiliar surroundings. Jenny tracked down sightings and leads. She educated the family and encouraged them not to give up hope. Thanks to Jenny’s determination, a dog crate, a video, and a McDonalds Happy Meal, Ginger was reunited two weeks after her life on the lam. The house where Ginger was found? Well, the occupants are Jenny fans, too. Jenny gave them the emotional support they needed when their own dog was lost two years ago.

Jenny’s good deeds do not end with the canine crowd. She’s also the creator of Melrose Lending a Hand, a group dedicated to pitching in and helping out whenever they can. Clean clothes, school supplies, and care packages are just a few ways group members help others.

When I met Jenny, I was surprised by her youth. A member of the MHS class of 2013, Jenny found her passion after graduation. There are so many things I wish for my own children as they navigate their young adulthoods. Mostly, I hope for simple comments like the one Jenny bestowed on me:

“When I see something that makes me sad, I just wonder how I can help.”
Jenny, she’s not just kind, she’s our kind.
