ABOUT US

The mission of MelroseKind is to inspire our community to lead with kindness, form connections with those of different demographics, and give to vulnerable populations, in donations, time, and respect. Our kindness initiatives make it easy for Melrosians to participate in many ways.

The origin of MelroseKind dates back to 2015, when a small group of middle schoolers took to heart the suggestion by the television show “South Park” that November 20 was “kick a ginger day.” Rather than finger pointing and protesting, we decided to take back the day in the way that seems to work best: with kindness.

What started as a social media campaign — encouraging fellow Melrosians to reach out to each other with random kindness — has become a beloved city-wide celebration. Throughout our community, in schools and neighborhoods, in the hospital and in the senior center, at the library, City Hall, and at so many of our local merchants, restaurants, and organizations, we revel in kindness throughout the day.

Melrose Kindness Day is our largest yearly initiative, and our team works hard to coordinate the many activities that happen on November 20th. The Kindness Porch Initiative is our year-long charitable drive. On porches throughout Melrose, we collect for those in need and bring focus to other non-profits doing good.

In 2023, we had our first inspirational community event, with a viewing of Come From Away with keynote speaker Kevin Tuerff. The success of our first event has inspired us to research ways to bring more kindness gatherings to our community.

As our mission — and our team — grows, we are eager to add more ways to be kind in our city.
